Expanding International Development Cooperation and Capacity Building
In 2013, Dr. Choi Oe-chool founded the Institute for International Development Cooperation (IIDC) to globalize Korea’s development experience. Under his leadership, IIDC has trained over 4,000 government officials and community leaders from more than 50 countries in sustainable development, poverty reduction, and governance reform. His collaborations with international organizations such as the UN, WFP, KOICA, and national governments have fostered long-term partnerships promoting grassroots-led development strategies.
Dr. Choi’s extensive leadership experience, particularly in the international arena, underscores his commitment to global development and education. He actively engages with embassies and international organizations, playing a pivotal role in advancing the Saemaul Movement and sustainable development initiatives. Notable activities include discussions and MOU negotiations with ambassadors from Rwanda, Bangladesh, Sierra Leone, and Zambia to establish Saemaul studies and cooperative development projects.
His collaboration with the Zambian Embassy resulted in a tripartite MOU between Yeungnam University, Zambia, and the Global Saemaul Development Network (GSDN). Similarly, his work with the Lake Victoria Region Local Authorities & Counties Cooperation (LVRLACC) and the UN World Food Programme (WFP) reflects his dedication to training international development professionals and contributing to global initiatives such as the ‘Zero Hunger’ goal.
Dr. Choi has also served as an advisor to the governments of Cambodia and regional governments in Ethiopia, including the Amhara Region, SNNPR, and Central Ethiopia Regional State, where he has played a key role in shaping rural development strategies based on Saemaul Movement principles. His participation in high-level discussions with the Central African Republic Presidency, the Central American Bank for Economic Integration (CABEI), and leaders from countries such as Vietnam and Myanmar further demonstrates his expertise in international development cooperation.
From 2011 to 2016, Dr. Choi spearheaded the organization of the Global Saemaul Forums, which brought together participants from numerous countries to exchange knowledge and foster collaboration. Additionally, his roles in various committees, including the Korea Regional Promotion Foundation, the Gimcheon Central Talent Scholarship Society, and the Korean Saemaul Studies Association, highlight his dedication to education, capacity building, and community development.
